A bald eagle sits in a tree in Chickamauga Battlefield. The bald eagle was added as an endangered species to Georgia’s Protected Wildlife List in 1974 and according to Georgia DNR, there were no known successful nests from 1971-1980.
The nesting population of bald eagles in Georgia has grown, surpassing 100 occupied nest territories in 2007 and more than 200 nest territories in 2015. The 2017 surveys documented a then-record 218 nests. In 2022, the totals ranged higher to 229 nests, and this year marked the first statewide survey since 2017.
